Originally founded in 1653 by the Knights of Malta, The Buccaneer’s history included life as a sugar estate, cotton estate, and cattle estate before settling down as a hotel in 1922 - the first locally operated hotel in St. Croix. The original guests were known as ‘continentals’ and contributed like a commune, helping out by raking the beach, mixing their own drinks, painting furniture, and planning meals. The rooms eventually grew in number as the resort grew in popularity and were named after the coins of the pirate days, such as Pretty Penny, Pieces of Eight, Doubloons, and Lucky Farthings. Yo-ho-ho and a barrel of rum, indeed.

The timeless accommodation of the Buccaneer is furnished with intimacy and elegance in mind. All the rooms feature a fabulous balcony perfect for taking in the spectacular views of the mountains, or the sea and the sky. Stay in the Historic Great House or the Specialty Suites where you can be your own captain. If you’re looking to really do the Buccaneer right, stay in the Beach House Villa at Whistle Point: a six-bedroom enclave with a main house, two cottages, and a private pool - not to mention incredible views, sunken bedrooms, and all the luxury you could ask for.

With not one but three beaches at the Buccaneer, all recognized as the finest in St Croix and indeed the world, there is plenty of places to perch yourself into paradise and be pampered by the good vibes. Grotto Beach has a pool and grill along with a water-sport center and adjoining golf course. Whistle Beach and Buck Island are simply perfection. There’s two pools and activities include ocean kayaks, tetherball and beachside basketball, learn-to-scuba classes, stand-up paddleboarding, golf and tennis. There’s also a fitness center and jogging trails, yoga sessions, and art classes.
