The Buccaneer
Unleash your inner buccaneer at this ultra romantic getaway and embrace the unlimited possibilities that comes from freedom. Established in the era of the pirates that represent the namesake of this luxury hotel, The Buccaneer is a world class resort in one of the planet’s most beautiful destinations. Family-run for generations, discerning guests of the highest taste have been relishing in the wonderful experience the hotel facilitates, with its focus on warmth and friendliness creating a state of total bliss. Rich in history and brimming with Caribbean charm, The Buccaneer is a place to relax completely and just be. But don’t just take our word for it: The Buccaneer is the proud recipient of numerous awards, honours, and distinctions from the travel industry and satisfied guests, such as Caribbean Travel & Life recently naming it one of the “Top Ten Classic Caribbean Hotels”. Yeah, it’s classic alright. And the pirate life awaits, just a short journey away. Originally founded in 1653 by the Knights of Malta, The Buccaneer’s history included life as a sugar estate, cotton estate, and cattle estate before settling down as a hotel in 1922 - the first locally operated hotel in St. Croix. The original guests were known as ‘continentals’ and contributed like a commune, helping out by raking the beach, mixing their own drinks, painting furniture, and planning meals. The rooms eventually grew in number as the resort grew in popularity and were named after the coins of the pirate days, such as Pretty Penny, Pieces of Eight, Doubloons, and Lucky Farthings. Yo-ho-ho and a barrel of rum, indeed. The timeless accommodation of the Buccaneer is furnished with intimacy and elegance in mind. All the rooms feature a fabulous balcony perfect for taking in the spectacular views of the mountains, or the sea and the sky. Stay in the Historic Great House or the Specialty Suites where you can be your own captain. If you’re looking to really do the Buccaneer right, stay in the Beach House Villa at Whistle Point: a six-bedroom enclave with a main house, two cottages, and a private pool - not to mention incredible views, sunken bedrooms, and all the luxury you could ask for. With not one but three beaches at the Buccaneer, all recognized as the finest in St Croix and indeed the world, there is plenty of places to perch yourself into paradise and be pampered by the good vibes. Grotto Beach has a pool and grill along with a water-sport center and adjoining golf course. Whistle Beach and Buck Island are simply perfection. There’s two pools and activities include ocean kayaks, tetherball and beachside basketball, learn-to-scuba classes, stand-up paddleboarding, golf and tennis. There’s also a fitness center and jogging trails, yoga sessions, and art classes. If you’ve got your family with you, you’ve come to the right place: The Buccaneer was recently voted “One of the Caribbean’s Top 3 Family Resorts” by Caribbean Travel & Life and Forbes, for being a natural playground for all ages, never crowded and offering an abundance of activities for the whole fam-damily. There’s a great Kid’s Camp for the lil’uns, too. The dining is outstanding, from banana pancakes in the sea breeze to Mediterranean specialities with a Caribbean twist set to steel drum bands. Eat classy at The Terrace, laid-back at The Mermaid, on-the-go at The Grotto Grill, celebrating special occasions at The Brass Parrot, and/or utterly romantic at Sugar Mill - featured on ABC’s “The Bachelor” - where Sean Lowe fell in love on a one-on-one dinner date. You can experience the same privacy and romance on The Bachelor five-night couple’s package. Or you can come as you are, and soak up the good life. Buccaneer style. Our Review
